AIM Virus Fixes
As an IM addict who recently got hit by a virus, I can recommend this free site VERY highly.
Birthday Calculator
Type in any date from 1905 to the present and it will tell you what day of the week it was, what the phase of the moon was, and a host of other useful information for those of us writing historically based work.
Royal Navy Humor
From the Royal Navy Communications Association (RNCA) website, which provides hilarious advice on what to do if you're missing the Navy experience (sample: Put on the headphones of your stereo, do not plug them in. Go and stand in front of the dishwasher. Say to nobody in particular, “dishwasher manned and ready Sir”. Stand there for three or four hours. Say once, again to nobody in particular, “dishwasher secured”. Remove the headphones, roll up the cord and put them away.) as well as the British versions of the Dolphin and Falcon codes (always useful for communicating in front of incompetent bosses; my favorite is Falcon 09, which stands for “Let go of my ears, I know my job”).
SIL Hebrew Font System
A free plug-in that allows you to use Hebrew (including vowels and cantillations) within American versions of Microsoft Word. Includes fonts, macros, and a keyboard management system, although it's a bit of a memory hog. If you despair of expressing your Jewish identity in Hebrew, you can always create a golem instead.
The Proceedings of the Old Bailey London 1674 to 1834
A fully searchable online directory, containing accounts of over 100,000 criminal trials held at London's central criminal court. Among other things, contains a fascinating “on this day” feature (i.e., “On this day in 1738 a male bastard child was suffocated by having its head shoved into a chamber pot”) with links to the cited cases.
